Why Football Players should Wrestle

if we look for maturity we look for toughness with a graphic ability we look for that mentality that winners have and we look for guys at reversal and specifically wrestling you know you’re talking about leverage you’re talking about strength you’re talking about determination you’re talking about being at your best when you’re tired those are things that win football games well guys learned that in the wrestling world you’re talking about linebackers offensive defensive line and pull backs those traits that you learn in wrestling they help football they’re killing the seeking where the need to please to analyte go straight let’s believe I’m in the zone to be so weird I’m a one-of-a-kind and I’ll bring death okay so loved wrestlers I think you know one of the toughest guys on our team right now is one of the most mild-mannered guys that you wouldn’t know is Matt James from Coeur d’Alene high school I mean this guy’s as tough as they come and he’s a wrestler and that’s his background and that’s been my experience over the years you get those rest the one thing you’re not gonna have to worry about is the toughness factor and tevis is a elite wrestler he go to college to wrestle and you go and you know I watched him wrestle I mean I was there at his practice for I mean at probably an hour and a half and I was exhausted in 20 minutes and that was their warm-up and I’m not kidding yeah I’m like that was the warmup scramble the biggest things that we look for when we go out and look at student athletes we want to make sure they have the the grades on a work ethic that they’ve demonstrated as athletes in this day and age where people try to encourage specialization I’m not a big fan of that quite frankly with high school athletes and I learned back in the eighties just the value of wrestling when I came here as an assistant coach in 1981 that was really kind of my initiation for the sport and when I really began to see some of the the real values or whether he would even talk about leverage and hand placement things of that nature but also I think it’s the competitive nature of being a high school wrestler the hard work that’s involved on if there’s a sport that’s more challenging or demanding from the physical standpoint now I would suggest the same from the mental standpoint you know it’s I think a great sport and this provides great training for anything anybody wants to play college football football was my main sport you know I was sort of looking for that individual individual goals with which wrestling brands had a pretty good college career I wrestled at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown my first season in college I was a Division 2 all-american I got third the next three years I went back to Division two tournament and I wondered 1 to 20 min 3 years in a row and I at that time you get to go to the Division one tournament with Division two national champ and I one knows as well so three division won tournaments and three division tubes equals six so that’s six national championships after my final Division one tournament I remember there being some talk about you know NFL scouts coming to see me and visit me at you PJ a few Scouts came up and work me out Steelers draft me students gave me an opportunity and I got drafted more than anything that helped me out play football was just the mental toughness first that I had from wrestling and then the physical attributes that I you know in terms of the leverage and you know not quitting and they’re just a basic one-on-one fight you know it’s the footballs you face it man or man just like wrestling is marjina when my best friend’s Darren Gordon played here and had Superbowl ring and it played a long long time the NFL was a great corner in Poplar Turner but he was an all-state wrestler and all-american wrestler in Oklahoma you just see that carryover that they’re used to working hard you know they meet challenges and take challenges on with a real positive attitude and they know what it is to really grind and work hard for a sustained period of time you know a lot of guys don’t like to get their face bump or their nose bumped and things of that nature but those are the things that’s going to make you tougher I mean definitely wrestling is a sport that you know breeds toughness you got to be tough just to get out there and get your buck kids if that’s what’s gonna happen and to keep going back and letting that happen that that takes a tough type of person this is just about to fight in the physical physicalness of wrestling and football days they go hand in hand you know it’s just it’s a tremendous sport in the recruiting in the recruiting world you know everything’s the greatest thing ever and the stadium’s degrees and this is gonna be so much fun and this is gonna be no it’s not gonna be so much fun you know this is gonna be a great process for you that’s gonna really help you grow as a young man but it’s gonna be the hardest thing you’ve ever done
