Whatsapp & Facebook virus: Dance of the pope

hi everyone, i hope you are doing great and
are being safe. my name is Konely Gonzalez and welcome to
your Information Security Newspaper channel. today we are talking about the whatsapp chain
messages of “the dance of the pope”. if you haven´t heard about it, don’t worry i
will tell everything about it here. in case you don’t remember, back in 2015,
there was a chain message that went something like this “urgent: tell all contacts from your list
not to accept a video called the dance of the pope. it is a virus that formats your
mobile. beware it is very dangerous. they announced it today on the radio. pass on to as many as you can. it was announced on the radio in usa.
and a variation of the message also existed, it said pretty much the same:
hello all, i received this urgent warning- to not accept a video called the dance of
the pope. it is a virus that formats your mobile. beware is very dangerous. you have fun with your list already, people
open it thinking that it is a joke. they are spreading it today on the radio. pass it on to those who can. well it is back and this is the actual one: please inform all contacts from your list
not to open a video called “dance of the pope”. it is a virus that formats your mobile. beware it is very dangerous. they announced it today on bbc radio. fwd this message to as many as you can! these messages are usually known as “the
martinelli hoax” because it starts the same way as a chain that mentioned a martinelli
video, also a few year ago. for those of you that don’t know, martinelli
is a brazilian professional football player who actually plays for the arsenal club, a
club based in london, england, that plays in the premier league, the top flight of english
football. and martinelli is known for his speed and
goal scoring abilities. that message back then bought some credibility
by mentioning, besides de martinelli video a new whatsapp gold version. here is what the whatsapp chain said back
then: if you know anyone using whatsapp you might
pass on this. an it colleague has advised that a video comes
out tomorrow from whatsapp called martinelli do not open it , it hacks your phone and nothing
will fix it. spread the word. if you receive a message to update the whatsapp
to whatsapp gold, do not click !!!!! now said on the news this virus is difficult and severe.pass
it on to all. so the fake part is the martinelli video,
and the bug that supposedly comes with it. the true part is the warning of whatsapp gold. we should already know there is no version
of whatsapp called gold or plus or only for celebrities, but years ago, people were not
so sure about it. at that time, there were other chain messages
that advertised a better version of whatsapp, called gold version and meant only for celebrities.
this chain as you can see said the version had finally been leaked and if you downloaded
you would have video chat and more emoticons, which at the time were not available in the
regular whatsapp version. what really happened is that users who clicked
on the provided link at the time, were sent to an unrelated web address, where they were
instructed to download a malicious piece of software nicknamed “whatsapp gold”.
at the time the company even released this statement saying that there is no gold or
plus version of whatsapp (miniatura). so today, this type of chain message is back,
announcing the “dance of the pope” video that comes with a virus. so let’s ask ourselves: is it truly possible
that a video can spread a malware infection on your phone by getting a bug on your media
player? well, actually, that sort of bug is very rare
these days and it usually gets patched very quickly. even if there were a dangerous bug of this
sort on your phone and your phone were at risk, it’s unlikely that “nothing would
fix it”. also, if the videos were supposed to “come
out tomorrow” more than four years ago, we think you can ignore them today. so here are some tips on what we should do
with these messages: 1- first of all, there a lot of fake new already
with all that’s going on, so let’s not spread more. please don’t forward it to your friends via
any messaging app or social network. 2- don’t be fooled by claims to authority. anyone can said they heard it on bbc radio
or wherever. if you want to believe bbc radio just go and
look it up there, or find your own sources of information directly. don’t just believe something because it has
a big name on it. 3- don’t forward it as a joke. it may be obvious for you that is fake news,
but it won’t be obvious to everyone. 4- always have your security updates up to
date and use an antivirus. security updates for mobile phones typically
close off lots of holes that crooks could exploit, so take advantage of updates! 5- don’t grant permissions to an app unless
it really needs them. mobile malware doesn’t need to use fancy
traps if you invite it in yourself and then give it more power and permission that it
needs. well, i hope all this information is useful
to you. hope you liked the video. don’t forget to subscribe and click the bell
button. my name is Konely Gonzalez and i wish you
the very best.
